WARNING: CHAD ON THE ROAD TOWARDS A NEW CIVIL WAR

By: Yves Tallot - Charilogone Editorial Staff

What seems to please the MPS-Kaka regime is the political and judicial spin surrounding Masra Succès. But this strategy is, unfortunately, likely to be counterproductive.

A serious prosecutor would have immediately seen that the element on which the accusation is based predates the alleged events. The real problem lies elsewhere: the structural tensions between farmers and herders, a major economic and social issue that the state has a responsibility to address thoroughly. Under these conditions, there was no justification for police custody, much less for pretrial detention.

I am not necessarily a supporter of Masra Succès. But as an observer, I cannot remain complacent in the face of this authoritarian drift of a tribal and brutal regime led by Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno.

Arresting a leader—even a contested one—who enjoys broad support within the country's ethno-political constituency risks seriously undermining national cohesion. As long as the southern issue is not seriously integrated into the governance and political life of the Republic, we will continue to witness this hopeless political tinkering's.

Meanwhile, while public opinion is distracted by political squabbles, the people are suffering. And they are the ones who matter to me: our southern producers, the defenseless farmers, abandoned in the face of a tribal army quick to support the herders in their atrocities.

The only viable political solution to get Chad out of this impasse is either federalism or a definitive end to militarism. We are no longer a nation!

Such a reform would create no losers: it would guarantee lasting stability and genuine socio-economic progress for all.

The rainy season is beginning. Our farmers need their land to produce, feed themselves, and sell the surplus, including to these same herders. This is the true chain of production and consumption in Chad. Introducing weapons into this vital circuit, seizing land by force, is madness. It is the strategic stupidity of Mahamat Kaka's government, a historic error that will inevitably push the Southerners toward self-defense—just as happened in Miski.

The MPS and its clan army will then bear full responsibility for a second civil conflict. But this time, I very much doubt they will emerge victorious. Because you don't govern a rebellious people for long, especially when it concerns my parents, Sara.

A word to the wise... goodbye.
