    Chad: A Republic in Crisis

By: Yves Tallot - Charilogone Editorial Staff

Chad's Fifth Republic is worse than the Fourth.
What's happening there is beyond comprehension.

    The Army
The Chief of Staff's bodyguard, a certain Captain Faris (a captain is an officer or, if you prefer, an equivalent officer in the army), begins to copiously insult "the Sara," a community from which the first President of the Republic, a Sara, hails. This doesn't bother anyone, not even the first Chadian soldier.

    The Justice System
A prosecutor charges and refers a politician, then searches the accused's phone for evidence. Finding nothing, we learn that this politician is in communication with Emmanuel Macron, Félix Tshisekedi, and the Emiratis. So far, nothing incriminates him. Meanwhile, four of the eighty detainees deported from Mbaïnamar died in private jails due to a lack of treatment for their previous illnesses.

    Infrastructure
A donated stadium was lavishly inaugurated, while refusing to invite the political opposition. Yet, it was named after Marshal Idriss Déby Itno (may he rest in peace! The MPS delivered on that one). But, most seriously, it was forgotten to specify which organization would be responsible for its maintenance. It would have been preferable to entrust the management of this stadium to the Chadian military engineers, for once in its history!

    Politics
The President invites his political friends from "United Chad" to a dialogue, excluding political opponents. Civil society does indeed exist, but His Excellency, the Marshal President of the Republic, Head of State, ignores it.

    Finance
The lack of transparency in the management of public finances leads us to ask a simple question: where is the wealth created by the development policies implemented? The Minister of Finance, in office for ten years, exploits mining resources without telling us exactly how much our treasury is collecting, even though the principle of transparency should prevail. Chadian taxpayers' money does not belong to the Minister of Finance. On the contrary, he owes them his salary and the opulence in which he lives!

    Local Authorities
It has been decided to clean the gutters only when it rains... never before! Whatever happens, we will be flooded.

    Urbanization
The Minister of Urban Planning is occupying all the capital's green spaces and is grabbing land, evicting entire rural communities. He is fragmenting and granting these spaces to his friends in the MPS, the true beneficiaries of the transition.

    A Republic Monopolized
We poor Chadians! We have no say in building this new Republic. Our friends in the MPS were there forty-five years ago. Fortunately, miracles still exist... and so does sleight of hand.

As someone once said: "A head of state is a demigod, fortunately a piece of god. With a simple stroke of a pen on papyrus, like the pharaohs of Egypt, he can change the course of history, but not your present or your future."
