The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, delivered the opening address at the 38th African Union Summit, which will be held on 15-16 February 2025 in Addis Ababa. In his speech, he highlighted the importance of justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations. He also addressed the continent's current challenges, including violence and conflict that continue to ravage some regions.
Faki Mahamat called for greater cooperation and concerted efforts to promote peace, security and sustainable development in Africa. He also expressed hope that this session will strengthen the African Union's commitment to its citizens and work together for a better future.
An election for the post of chairperson of the African Union Commission will be organized during this summit. The current president, Moussa Faki Mahamat, will not run again and three main candidates are vying for his succession: Raila Odinga of Kenya, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar. This is a crucial moment for the African Union, as the new president will play a key role in leading and managing continental affairs.
